State Department officials will be attending the National Congress of American Indians’ Mid-Year Conference to take input from tribal leaders as it reconsiders its negative position on the U.N.’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. This is an initial tribal consultation with the U.S. Department of State on the matter.
Native Sun News and iNK Barrel Video, both based in Rapid City, S.D., are teaming up with NCAI to broadcast the event live from the organization’s Mid-Year Conference in Rapid City, S.D.
In 2007 the U.N. General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples that promotes protection against discrimination and genocide and reaffirms native peoples’ right to maintain unique cultural traditions and recognizes their right of self-determination.
The United States cast one of only four votes against the declaration. The Obama Administration is reviewing that stand.
Native Sun News Publisher Tim Giago, who is a renowned American Indian businessman, author and Oglala Sioux Tribe elder, said he was excited about the web broadcast. “We are very proud be working with the NCAI to bring this important programming to a national audience,” he said.
iNK Barrel Video Founder Stewart Huntington agreed. “We, too, are proud of our association with the NCAI.” He said. “And we are also excited about our growing partnership with the Native Sun News to expand web video broadcast opportunities in Native American communities across the country. “
