Video Network Spreads to 10 States
iNK Barrel List of Affiliates Grows Quickly
The iNK Barrel Video Network has swiftly expanded across the country in the past three months and now includes newspaper affiliates in 10 states from Georgia to Montana.

iNK Barrel affiliate newspapers are working together to bring live feeds of high school and small college sporting events to newspaper websites. The network expects to carry a large slate of football and basketball games this up-coming season. This, along with niche broadcasting events like exclusive Sturgis Motorcycle Rally programs and the Rodeo Network, allow affiliates to capitalize on new revenue opportunities.

"I'm really excited about the iNK Barrel Video Network," said Jeff Mutter, Kentucky Vice President/Sales and Marketing for Community Newspaper Holding, Inc. "We're looking forward to exploring this new opportunity - and this new medium - with the CNHI papers in Kentucky, Georgia and West Virginia."

The network now has affiliates from multiple newspaper companies including CNHI, Wick Communications, Boone Newspaper Group, Schurz Communications, Seaton Media, Huckle Publishing, Brehm Communications, News Media Corporation and United Communications Corporation.

Some of the newest members of the network include the Owatonna People’s Press, Faribault Daily News, Austin Daily Herald, and Albert Lea Tribune in Minnesota. The Washington Times Herald, Greensburg Daily News, Rushville Republican, Batesville Herald Tribune, The New Albany Tribune, The Jeffersonville Evening News and Princeton Daily Clarion in Indiana. iNK Barrel Video Network also is proud to include the Daily Citizen in Dalton, Georgia, along with newspapers from South Dakota which include the Aberdeen News American, Watertown Public Opinion, Brookings Register, Yankton Press and Dakotan, and the Black Hills Pioneer in Spearfish.

Papers Urged To Move Fast On Live Sports
Indiana Press Association Calls Wisconsin Ruling A Wake Up Call
The Indiana newspaper association prodded newspapers to make arrangements with their local high schools to broadcast sports events - before start-up competition moves in.

“Newspapers need to sit down with their local school districts and hammer out an agreement if they want to stream high school sporting events on the newspapers websites,” Hoosier State Press Association General Counsel Steven Key wrote in the June 24 edition of the Indiana Publisher. “If you don’t, someone else may beat you to the punch, and create an exclusive contract, limiting the amount of video you can display.”

This advice follows the federal court decision reached earlier this month involving the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association and Wisconsin newspapers.

...The Wisconsin decision gives a possible preview to how other courts might look at questions as to whether a public entity, such as a school corporation, could enter into exclusive contracts with private companies for broadcast or Internet streaming of its public events.

...Newspapers should be pro active about locking up their local schools before a competitor corners the market on Internet streaming.

For papers concerned about the technical aspect, there are private entities willing to partner with the newspaper. ..I know iNK Barrel Video Networks of Rapid City, South Dakota, is working with Indiana newspapers on a high school sports network.
